Introduction

Academia Iria Flavia. Escuela acreditada por el Instituto Cervantes.

Academia Iria Flavia was founded in 1994 in Santiago de Compostela. It is very centrally located, at a 2-minute walk from the historic district of the city and very close to all the major monuments.

It is a small, family-like school managed directly by the owners.

It offers 6 classrooms and an area with computers with free Internet access for students. Furthermore, there is wi-fi connection available in all the facilities.

The total number of students can reach 90; the average group size is 5 students with a maximum of 8 (10 in June, July and August). It is very easy, therefore, to contact all the school staff, both teachers and administrative or managerial.

Actually, relation with teachers is one of the most important values you will find while you are here. You relate to your teacher in the classroom, but also to other groups’ teachers during coffee breaks or other activities.

In order to select the teachers for our Spanish courses, we assess their training and professionalism, but also their human qualities: friendliness, capacity to create a good environment in the classroom and their liking “giving a hand” in and out of the school.

All these points sum up to reach our objective: helping you learn Spanish in a relaxed, familiar and entertaining environment.

Metodology

Spanish courses in Santiago de Compostela.

Most of your course will focus on talking: with your teacher, with other groups' teachers, in and out the classroom, during coffee breaks, with our secretary, in the activities, in the market where you are likely to go one day with your group and teacher (Just a tip: do your shopping there and have a talk with the ladies tending the stalls of vegetables, fish or meat).

Of course we must save some time to teach you the grammar rules that will allow you to speak so much.

The activities we propose in the classroom are focussed on encouraging the dialogue and the exchange of ideas. That is the aim of the discussion topics we introduce, and of the exercises in groups or pairs... We like dealing with current events: they encourage the dialogue as any other, but moreover they are useful to let you talk about them to the family you live with. We intend to make what you do in the classroom useful “out there”.

The classrooms are arranged so that this methodology is possible: they are large enough, sunny and decorated to make you feel at ease. And what is more inportant, students and teacher sit around the same table, which encourages conversation and makes it easier.

Goals

Academia Iria Flavia activity programme chases two main goals:

  1. Help you practice your Spanish in contexts and situations other than the classroom.
  2. Help you gain a wider and more down-to-earth knowledge of Galicia’s culture and society, which is rather different from the image of Spain typically held out of our borders.

To this end, the city of Santiago itself provides a valuable help. Here, especially in certain periods of the year, there are plenty of things to do or to see: concerts in all the historic district squares during the summer festivities, many of which are free; museums, also free, as the Etnográfico del Pueblo Gallego (Galician People Ethnographic Museum); film and theater seasons; street shows; all kind of exhibitions… We will keep you up to date about what is going on in Santiago while you are here.

Furthermore, Academia Iria Flavia organizes at least 2 free activities weekly. In the summer the average is of 4 activities a week. On the first day of your course, and provided there is a minimum of 5 students beginning the course, we invite you to an orientation tour around the city followed by a drink and tapas in the historic district. This will be your first taste of Spain!

A typical week at Academia Iria Flavia

Spanish courses in Santiago de Compostela

Monday: orientation tour and tapas

On the first day of your course, Academia Iria Flavia takes you for a guided tour to the city, followed by a glass of wine and some tapas in the old part of the town with the rest of the students who begin the course with you. We are sure it is the best way of beginning a good relationship.

Tuesday: movie!

Film showing at the school.

Wednesday: Museum

A visit to the Galician People Museum, where you can get in touch with the different expressions of traditional craftsmanship, the musical instruments from the Pórtico de la Gloria, the traditional trades (fishing nets, agricultural traditions, basketwork) and a part of the far-off past of Galicia : Celtic forts and Roman settlements.

Thursday: Going for a walk

Trekking along the Old Path of Sarela River, in the outskirts of Santiago.

Friday: tapas

Tapas tour in the Old Town.

Saturday: beach!

One day trip to the Barbanza Peninsula. There you will see extraordinary beaches and you can also visit one of the Celtic forts that you saw in the Museum.

Sunday: even more!

Take the opportunity to practise some sports, or to visit, alone or in a group, the Galician places you might be interested in. Ask us for advice.

Gastronomical activities

Spanish courses in Santiago de Compostela.

Wine tasting

In O Beiro, one of the best cellars in Galicia. Led by one of our teachers, Academia Iria Flavia invites you to taste the most representative wines in Galicia, as well as the cheeses and cold meats which are typical in our region. The owner of the cellar will give us some tips about the most important Galician wines, its characteristics and the differences from other Spanish wines. This activity is offered at an additional cost.

Tapas Tour

Led by an IF teacher, we wonder about the most typical bars and taverns in the Old Town. In Santiago, ir de vinos is a traditional activity for people of all ages. It means we go to different bars or taverns; in each bar, we order a drink (wine, beer, even water or soft drinks!) and taste the tapa we are offered. Every bar offers free tapas with your drink, and each of them has its own speciality: empanada, mussels, potatoes, different kinds of meat... The cost of this activity wil depend on how many bars we visit...

Cultural activities

Spanish courses in Santiago de Compostela.

Attending to concerts, cinema, theatre...

Academia Iria Flavia's teachers will go with you to the most important concerts and cultural events taking place during your stay in Santiago.

Gathering and coffee

An Academia Iria Flavia's teacher will take you for a coffee (or a chocolate con churros!) to one of the superb cafes in the Old Town. The point that you can have a pleasant chat with your teacher and have a nice time. But you have to take part in it!!

Film showings

In the facilities of the school you can enjoy showing of Spanish or Latin-american films. All students can attend these projections for free. Afterwards, and provided there is some time left, an IF teacher leads an open discussion about the film.

Spanish music samplings

We select some songs, bands and singers that adequately represent the current music scene in Spain or Latin America. We also listen to some “classics” of modern music. This activity is complemented with comments from the teacher, texts and explanations about the lyrics.

Excursions

Spanish courses in Santiago de Compostela.

Half or full day excursions to places of great historical or ecological interest: Natural Park of Corrubedo / Barbanza Peninsula, ciudades (A Coruña, Pontevedra), Rias Bajas and Fishing Villages, Finisterre, National Park of Atlantic Islands, Ribeira Sacra, hiking around Santiago...

The cost of these activities will depend on the place we visit.

Natural Park of Corrubedo / Barbanza Peninsula

We go to the coast, where we can find some of the most beautiful beaches in Galicia. We visit two places of great interest: Castro Baroña (the remains of a pre-roman village, located in a small peninsula over the Atlantic Ocean) and Corrubedo (a protected Natural Park with some breathtaking sand dunes right in the sea-shore and surrounded by unspoiled beaches). Then we climb to A Curota Mount, where we will enjoy a view over the Galician coast line, from the Portugal border to Cape Finisterre.

Excursion to A Coruña

The 2nd biggest city in Galicia. We visit the most interesting parts: the Old Town, the sea promenade and Riazor Beach, the harbour and marina, the Torre de Hércules (a Roman lighthouse which is still in use)… Afterwards we can visit the aquarium, looking over the sea, and the interactive museum Domus-House of men.

Excursion to Pontevedra

The capital of the Province, this city houses one of the best preserved (though less known) historical quarters in Galicia. We shall also visit the Provincial Museum and its impressive collection of Celtic remains: jewellery, masks, tools…

Rias Bajas and Fishing Villages

An excursion through the Rías Baixas (Lower Bays), in the South Coast of Galicia. We visit the fishing village of Cambados, where the famous Albariño wine is produced. We shall be able to visit a “bodega” and enjoy a wine tasting. Afterwards, we visit the picturesque fishing village of Combarro; the National Trust maintains and preserves this site because of its medieval streets and typical buildings like horreos (grain stores) and cruceiros (stone crosses).

Excursion to Finisterre

We visit Cape Finisterre (the legendary Roman Finis Terrae), the most westerly point in Europe, in the open Atlantic Ocean. We will also visit some villages on the so called Coast of Death, an area framed by steep cliffs, rough seas and impressive lighthouses and landscape, as well as beautiful semi-virgin beaches. This area is an unavoidable international commercial shipping route and it is famous for the numerous shipwrecks that have occurred and still occur in its waters. In Fisiterre we will also visit the Museum of the Sea.

National Park of Atlantic Islands - Cies Islands

One of our teachers will lead you to the Cíes Islands, recently declared National Park. It is placed in the mouth of Vigo Bay, in the South of Galicia, in the Atlantic Ocean. The visit is especially worth paying because of the wonderful landscape, made up of unspoiled beaches and high cliffs. There is also an excellent seabird observatory. If you want to enjoy a nice day on the best beach in the world (The Guardian), away from the noise and crowds, this is the place to go.

Excursion to the Ribeira Sacra

One of the most beautiful natural spots in inland Galicia.Along the iver Sil canyons, we visit several monasteries from different periods, which give name to this area (Sacred Bank). The excursion includes a visit to Ribadavia (with its perfectly preserved jewish quarter), a trekking route among monasteries and an optional boat trip along the river Sil canyons. Includes private bus and professional tourist guide.

Hiking around Santiago

A relaxing walk through the outskirts of Santiago de Compostela. We will get to know the beautiful Galician countryside, the little villages with their traditional stone houses, old traditional buildings like ’muíños’ (old-fashioned water-mills, some of them carefully restored and back in use) and hórreos (grain stores), We will learn about the traditional way of life in rural Galicia and enjoy some beautiful sceneries through the forests and by the riverside. It is not a hard route, but comfortable shoes and a water supply is strongly advised.

Santiago de Compostela

A beautiful city, with a great artistic and historic value.

There are many reasons to choose Santiago for your language travel. It is small: 90,000 inhabitants and 45 minutes on foot from side to side. It is also quiet and welcoming. It is friendly.

Locals love spending their time in the street: tapas at noon, a good time at a café in the historic district, sun-bathing at the Quintana Square or listening to the Banda Municipal de Música (City Council Music Band), on Sundays in Rúa do Vilar.

The city offers high quality services, as it is the administrative capital of Galicia and the Seat of the Autonomic Government. It houses one of the oldest Universities in Spain (35,000 students every year) and it is the end of the Camino de Santiago (Saint James Way).

It is not only a centre of religious pilgrimages, but also a young and fun city as a third of its population is composed of university students.

It has a year-long entertainment and cultural offer, with annual programmes in the Auditorio de Galicia (Auditorium), in theatres, in museums or in the streets and squares of the old town. In certain periods this offer becomes even more intense: Cineuropa in November; concerts of different types during the Apostle celebrations in July and during the Ascensión festivities in May; traditional celebrations in the streets in San Juan’s night in June (23rd to 24th); open-air dance festival in June.

The origins of the city date back to 10th century. It is a beautiful city with a great artistic and historic value. It is a UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage, as it is the Way that leads there, and with one of the largest and best preserved historic districts in Spain. It is surrounded by a large group of easy-access parks and green areas, all of them very well integrated in the city.

Its situation is very convenient, at the same distance from the main cities in Galicia and with good connections with them: Coruña to the North and Vigo to the South. Furthermore, it is at one hour by bus from some of the best beaches of Northern Spain. It has also good connections with Portugal. But above all, Santiago is not yet very popular in the route of language travels. Unlike other more popular places, it does not suffer saturation of overseas students. Actually, 85% of tourists arriving in the city are Spanish.

Galicia

Spanish courses in Santiago de Compostela.

Galicia is not just about Santiago de Compostela. We can find the most varied options to enjoy its art, culture, traditions, the landscape and the gastronomy throughout its four provinces ( A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense and Pontevedra).

From Ribadeo to A Guarda there are 640 kms of coast which offer unique landscapes such as that of Playa de las Catedrales in Ribadeo (Beach of the Cathedrals), some of the tallest cliffs in Europe in San Andrés de Teixido, the sunniest coast in northern Spain in Rías Baixas or the National Park of the Atlantic Islands where Cies Islands stand out in the mouth of the Ría de Vigo.

The mountain as opposed to the sea. It is worth mentioning its natural areas such as Fragas do Eume and the Ancares, Courel and Peña Trevinca Mountains, not to mention, of course, the Ribeira Sacra and the Sil Canyons.

Any of the Galician provinces offer numerous varied examples of almost every artistic style from the Celt hill-forts in Baroña and Santa Tecla to the Roman monuments such as the Wall of Lugo or the Hércules Lighthouse as well as examples of the best Visigothic, Romanesque and Barroque arts and the Great Monasteries (Samos, Oseira, Sobrado dos Monxes, Oia, Monfero, Aciveiro…).

Galicia is a land of tradition, folklore: Carnival, Maios -May Festival-, Rapa das Bestas (loosely the Capture of the Beasts, where the most experienced stockbreeders, known as aloitadores -someone who fights-, grapple with the wild horse until they are able to control it enough to brand it and cut off its mane); pilgrimages (Milagros de Amil in Moraña, Virxe da Barca in Muxía, Corpus Christi in Ponteareas, Gondomar and Ares…).

The gastronomic festivals deserve to be in a category all their own. Throughout the year we have festivals where you can try the most varied dishes that become the centrepiece: Galician broth, seafood, peppers, salmon, cheese, wine, aguardiente (strong liqueur), lamprey, capon…

Culture and leisure in Galicia

Gastronomy

Gastronomy is one of the pillars of Galician culture, art and tradition. It is specially rich and varied, and combines first quality products (fish, meat, shellfish, vegetables, cheese, wines and spirits...) prepared in mulitple ways, though always keeping a touch of simplicity and tradition. It would be hard to say what the typical dish from Galicia is, since almost any of them could hold this title.

Typical winter dishes are “lacón con grelos” (pork ham served wiith boiled turnip tops) or “cocido” (a stew with pork and veal, spicy red pepper sausage, black pudding and chickpeas). Other dishes that are served all year round are “pulpo” (boiled octopus with red pepper and olive oil), empanada (a kind of pie stuffed with meat, tuna fish, cod, cockles or any other products), different meats, lots of first quality seafood and shellfish, pimientos de Padrón (a kind of really tasty small fried green pepers), different kinds of cheese, wonderful pastries (like the typical almond cake from Santiago), red and white wines (Albariño or Ribeiro being the most renowned).

And for a final touch, a typical Galician meal must be topped off by any of the homemade traditional liquors like “queimada” or “aguardiente de hierbas” (made of a selection of herbs soaked in a kind of grappa), two strong liquors that will warm up your spirit and make you feel like staying in Galicia for a little longer!

Shopping

Santiago de Compostela, and Galicia in general, offer a great range of possibilities both for those who want just a souvenir to take home, and for those who wish to spend a whole day shopping.

The rich Galician handicrafts include jewellery and other pieces made of jet and silver, traditional pottery (Sargadelos, Castro, Gundivós, or Niñodaguia) and works in stoneware, clay, slate, wood or leather.

Textil handcrafts deserve special attention. From linen works to the fine lace-making of Camariñas and other villages of the North-west coast, where over 3000 craftswomen keep this ancient tradition alive.

Also, every Galician city has its own commercial areas and shopping malls, where fashion shops are worth a special mention. Galicia is one of the most important fashion-design centres in Spain, and Galician creations can be found worldwide. Zara, Adolfo Domínguez, Roberto Verino, Antonio Pernas or Florentino are only a few of the many Galician designers whose works can be found in the most exclusive boutiques in the world.
